History

Community Growth was started in January 2015 by Simon Buywala and Meaghan Power.

While walking to volunteer, Meaghan met Simon on the road and their friendship blossomed. Soon after, Simon offered 2 acres of land to begin a project in Buwenda Village. After much consideration, it was decided that agriculture was the best way to have a long and lasting positive impact on the community.

By teaching and supplying the tools and land for agriculture, Community Growth is now able to help women discover a sense of empowerment and be part of something that benefits both themselves and their community. By giving women the power of knowledge they, in turn, have the ability to pass this knowledge down through generations and within their community.

Originally called Community Growth Through Gardening, it was decided “Community Growth” best suited the organization by observing the rapid progress into other areas during that year.

This project consists of approximately 20 women, most of whom are widowed and left with several children to care for with little to no land for crops.

In February 2017,  Simon and Meaghan began a sponsorship program for children to attend school.  This program has been a huge success and now several children are attending school through Community Growth.
